Attended a reception in Ottawa for the newly appointed Guyanese High Commissioner to Canada, Mrs Clarissa Riehl, but have no pictures to show for it.
I did spend some time though, walking around Parliament Hill and then the afternoon at the Chateau Laurier where the reception was held. The hotel is more than 100 years old and is a sister hotel to the Hotel Fort Garry in Winnipeg. The Chateau Laurier had a lovely little art gallery which I spent some time perusing. I wish I had more time to spend there. Walking through the hotel makes you feel like you are royalty or close to one anyway.
Ottawa is such a political town and I clearly got the feeling (mostly intuition and observation) that there is a hierarchy of diplomats. By the list of attendees, one could come to some conclusions about who is at the top of the pecking order.
My main conclusion is that I would not make a good politician. That is not the same as saying that I would not make a good diplomat. The difference for me is that one knows when to shut up and the other doesn't. Figure out which is which.
